Living Green Saving Green

I read this article and I already do four of the six activities listed on a regular basis. How much do I save? I know it’s several hundred dollars a year.

Bike commute to work everyday / Use bike for small shopping trips - CHECK
Work 10 hour days – CHECK
Set digital thermostat “smartly” – CHECK - it’s set around 68 degrees in the winter.  
Eat more veggies and less meat- CHECK – Er, well I try to. I ate six apples at the apple orchard the other day. 

The two things I don’t do are “hang clothes out to dry“ - which would be fairly easy if we had a clothesline and “make your own cleaner” – well I like my Windex so I’m not giving that one up.

Homemade Potato Chips

Mara got a recipe for making  homemade potato chips from Judy and Guy. I thought I’d share the recipe with you.

- Cut 1 large potato into very thin slices (as thin a possible)
- Lay out a single layer of slices onto a large microwave safe tray
- Microwave slices for 3 minutes
- While slices are in the microwave pour 1/4 cup of olive oil into the bottom of a large skillet. Turn heat to high
- When the oil is hot take a tongs and place slices individually into oil with stainless steel tongs
- Slices are down when they start turning a darker brown color.  Let oil drip from the chip before putting onto plate
- Salt to Taste
- Makes about 60 chips

June 2008 Bike Journal – Half Way There!

I made it to the halfway point right on target! Exactly halfway through the year I am at the halfway point of my milage. I hit 750 miles with 4 hours to spare before July. I just wouldn’t have forgiven myself if I was just short of my goal for the month. So between Saturday, Sunday and Monday I cranked out 54 miles in three rides.

May turned out to be the most productive month in terms of mileage so far. I broke 200 miles an 1 1/2 before the clock turned to June. I was determined to break 200 miles for the month and I did. If I can make 200 or more per month every month until September I’ll almost surely make my goal.

April Bike Journal

Well… I did the math and I’ll have to average 164 miles per month every month in order to make 1,500 for the year. I think I can do it! The weather will be getting nicer and nicer and I’ll have more excuses to go out and ride. If you’ll notice I almost exactly hit what should be the average every month which is 125 miles. I’ll need to far surpass that mark the next couple of months in order to be on target. We’re talking a couple of 200+ months.

My “New” Ride

I was checking out the bikes at the Salvation Army when I stumbled upon this gem… a Gary Fisher Wahoo. It doesn’t look like much but it really is a nice bike. The chain and sprockets are rusty, so it’s really squeaky and the brakes are very worn. It needs new cables, brake pads and a lube job and I think it’ll be good to go! And the best part is it was only $11.50! When it was new it was around $300. A few pictures below.

I’m finally getting around to putting up my March bike milage. Right now I’m about 130 miles off my pace to 1,500. I need to pick up some slack and quick! 278 miles so far this year. If I keep this pace I’ll just break 1,000 miles. I think I can do better than that.

It’s usually Mara’s job to give Audrey a bath but tonight I decided to take the reins and give it a try. It was really very fun and we both had a good time while mommy took pictures.
